Maintenance is a piece of digital literature which meditates on our precarious, yet ultimately fulfilling mortal existence, caught between death and transcendence. It is an aleatory poem which oscillates between verdant and wilting imagery, the reader interacting with the poem by “watering” it—moving and clicking the mouse pointer on screen. The plant-poem cannot be too wet or too dry, it requires temperate conditions in order to remain healthy. With continual care the poem moves toward spiritual meditations, eventually resulting in a worship of the watering God—the reader.
