‘So you’ve got to meet this guy—’
‘Who?’
‘Well, he was introduced to me as Implication but I’ve heard other people call him If-then.’
‘What’s so special about him?’
‘So he turns up, everyday in the same spot next to the Menzies, but always wearing a different shirt. But the shirts all kind of look alike. They all have two things separated by an arrow pointing from one to the other.’
‘What?’
‘Yeah like yesterday it was a leaf pointing to an origami crane. So the deal is, if you give him the first thing, then he’ll give you the thing the arrow points to.’
‘So you—’
‘Yeah! I got this sweet origami crane right here. And all I had to do was give him any old leaf. I even picked it right off the ground in front of him and he didn’t seem to mind, just gave me the crane. I think the guy’s a bit simple.’
‘Is that him!?’
‘Yep! What’s he wearing… Ok we have to find a letter A and then he’ll give us a letter B?’
‘That’s weird.’
‘What can I say? It’s fun though. Hey start looking for an A.’
‘Can we peel this sticker off the bus stop?’
‘I don’t know, I don’t think I’d want to stick around for security to find out though. Hang on. I think one of my exercise books has a letter A on the cover.’
‘Will that work? He’ll just take a torn bit of book cover?’
‘Yeah! Here it is. I’ll just rip the top bit off and…’
‘I wonder what the B is going to be made from…’
‘Ok, let’s give this to him.’
‘Hey, my man. I’ve got something for you. What have you got for me?’
‘...’
‘Hey, look, I’ve got a letter A for you. Isn’t that what you want?’
‘...’
‘I don’t think he wants a bit of your torn book, dude.’
‘No, look his shirt says—’
‘OH MY GOD!’
‘Recoil, foul mortals, for it is me, the demon Bee!’
‘What… the…’
‘By giving Material Implication his antecedent, you have summoned me! The Consequent! And so the spell of Modus Ponens has been invoked!’
If A, then B.
A
Therefore, B
