Consider the simple statement: “The present King of France is bald.”
This presents a puzzle for classical logic. The statement appears to predicate baldness of a non-existent entity. According to the Law of Excluded Middle, it must be either true or false. But how can we assign a truth value to a statement about something that doesn’t exist?
This challenge to classical logic is representative of a broader class of problems that have motivated much work in analytic philosophy.
The MO in analytic philosophy when faced with apparent counterexamples to logical principles is to disambiguate and make precise. The analytic tradition emphasizes argumentative clarity, precision, and the logical analysis of concepts. Problems that seem to challenge logic often dissolve when we become more precise about what we mean.
Russell’s theory of definite descriptions exemplifies this approach. “The present King of France is bald” seems problematic because it appears to predicate baldness of a non-existent entity. Russell shows that its logical form is actually:
∃x((King-of-France(x) ∧ ∀y(King-of-France(y) → y=x)) ∧ Bald(x))
This reads: “There exists exactly one present King of France, and he is bald.” (Or, more literally: “There exists a person X who is the King of France and for any person Y, if Y is the King of France then Person Y is actually Person X, and X is bald.”) Since France has no king, the existential claim is false, making the entire statement false. No problematic reference to non-existent entities remains.
This methodology extends to context-sensitive terms. The analytic approach treats context-sensitivity as linguistically triggered, where contextual parameters become explicit parts of the logical form. For example, “John is tall” is ambiguous, so the analytic approach would be to disambiguate it by restating it as something like “John is tall relative to comparison class C and standard S,” where C and S are contextually determined parameters. With context made explicit, each statement has a determinate truth value.
But there are some paradoxes which elude the methodology of disambiguation and making-precise. The sorites paradox runs as follows:
Premise 1: 100,000 grains of sand make a heap.
Premise 2: For any number n, if n grains make a heap, then n-1 grains also make a heap.
Conclusion: Therefore, 1 grain makes a heap.
The reasoning from premises to conclusion is valid, but the conclusion is absurd. Since Premise 1 is obviously true, the problem must lie with Premise 2. But Premise 2 also seems compelling—surely removing one grain can’t make the difference between heap and non-heap.
The standard analytic move is to make it more precise: stipulate an exact cutoff. Perhaps exactly 10,000 grains make a heap, or exactly 5,847, or whatever. This blocks the paradox by denying Premise 2—there will be some number n such that n grains make a heap but n-1 grains do not.
But this solution faces the arbitrariness problem: why exactly 10,000 rather than 9,999 or 10,001? The precision seems completely arbitrary and fails to capture how “heap” actually functions as a concept for us.
Linguists study people’s responses to paradox and vagueness. When we encounter borderline cases, we exhibit systematic patterns of resistance to making determinate judgments. We don’t express ignorance (“I don’t know if it’s a heap”) but rather uncertainty about the appropriateness of the concept itself (“It’s sort of a heap, I guess”) suggesting that vagueness may be a semantic feature of the concepts themselves, not merely an epistemic limitation on our part.
So if some concepts are genuinely vague, then attempts to make them precise don’t clarify them but change the subject entirely. Our ordinary concept of “heap” allows for borderline cases and contextual flexibility. The modified version with rigid boundaries behaves differently from the original concept.
The inherency of vagueness in some of our concepts means that some of our statements will be inherently vague too. This makes classical logic’s insistence on bivalence (every statement is either true or false) questionable: some statements might be neither true nor false, or they might be true to a degree.
Similarly, if borderline cases can exhibit both positive and negative features, we might need to question the Law of Non-Contradiction. Perhaps some statements can be both true and false, or true in one respect and false in another.
This opens the door to non-classical logics.
One way of handling vague statements is to add a third truth value, interpreted as either indeterminate, or neither true nor false. In Łukasiewicz’s three-valued logic, “John is tall” might receive the truth value ½ when John is of borderline height. This third truth value derives its use from an explicit account of how it interacts with the logical connectives like conjunction, disjunction, implication and negation; it can be handled just as true and false can be, tracking its flow through sentences and its impact on the overall meaning of a statement.
Another fruitful direction non-classical logics can go is in how they handle contradiction. Paraconsistent logics allow some statements to be both true and false without the effect being that absolutely anything is provable after doing so. These logics block the principle of explosion (a feature, or a bug, of classical logic) that lets any statement follow from a contradiction.
So rather than seeing these as exotic alternatives to the “one-and-only” classical logic, we might see them as tools for modeling important features of language and reasoning that classical logic cannot capture.
